LEGO Previews 2014 Sets for ‘Ghostbusters,’ ‘Star Wars Rebels’ and ‘The LEGO Movie’
As part of the American International Toy Fair going on in New York City, LEGO invited press to the Javitz Center, known for housing NY Comic-Con, to preview its upcoming toy lines. Everything from LEGO DUPLO to the ‘LEGO Movie‘ line was introduced in a big reveal of 246 sets. While we’ve already detailed one of the coming debuts for ‘Guardians of the Galaxy,’ here’s just some of what was shown from the coming 30th anniversary set for ‘Ghostbusters,’ the new ‘Star Wars Rebels‘ figures and more.
LEGO previously announced plans to release a new set in line with the 30th anniversary of ‘Ghostbusters,’ which starred Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis and Ernie Hudson in the iconic roles of those wise-cracking ghost hunters. The new 508-piece LEGO set will hit select stores and LEGO channels in June of this year for $49.99 USD, and will include the four figures shown above and the familiar Ecto-1 vehicle.
According to the official LEGO description:
Celebrate 30 years of ghostbusting action by building the iconic Ghostbusters™ Ecto-1 car out of LEGO® bricks. Selected by LEGO Cuusso members based on an original concept submitted by Brent Waller, a 3-D Environment Artist in the video game industry from Brisbane, Australia, this fun and iconic vehicle from the blockbusting ‘80s movie is fully loaded with all the paranormal detection equipment needed to track down those ghastly ghosts. It also features cool Ghostbusters logo decoration, removable roof, tracking computer and seats for 3 minifigures.
The set will also include “a booklet containing building instructions, selected images and behind-the-scenes details about the classic ‘Ghostbusters’ film.”
‘Star Wars Rebels’
Accompanying the new animated ‘Star Wars Rebels’ TV series, which will debut on Disney XD this coming fall starting with an hourlong premiere on The Disney Channel, are new LEGO sets honoring the cast of characters in mini-form.
Freddie Prinze Jr., who voices the character of Jedi “cowboy” Kanan in ‘Star Wars Rebels,’ came out during the LEGO preview event to showcase the two upcoming building sets, to be released starting on August 1. One set will honor the Millennium Falcon-esque “Ghost” (shown above), which acts as home base for the rebels in the series. Retailing at $89.99, the 929-piece set includes a Stormtrooper minifigure, as well as three of the new ‘Star Wars Rebels’ characters (shown below from L to R) – Hera Syndulla, Kanan Jarrus and Zeb.
The other ‘Star Wars Rebels’ set coming our way, one that we’ve glimpsed before, is the “Phantom” ship set, retailing for $24.99 and featuring the “attack shuttle that works in conjunction with The Ghost set.” Ezra Bridger, the lead of the TV series, and Chopper, his grumpy droid, are the included figures of the Phantom, which also includes ”folding wings, tools and a detachable cockpit with cargo hold where pilot Ezra Bridger can store his cadet helmet and blaster.”
‘The LEGO Movie’
LEGO recently experienced success with its latest big-screen film, ‘The LEGO Movie,’ which will surely help revolutionize the brand in a big way. Aside from being the top grossing film in America during its premiere weekend and a major publicity move for the toys, the film perfectly segways into adjoining movie-themed LEGO sets, of which there are plenty.
One of the coolest offerings from the 2014 LEGO preview was MetalBeard’s ship, the Sea Cow (shown above). This set will be available for $249.99 through select retailers and LEGO channels this coming March, and will contain 2,741 pieces. From LEGO’s official description of the set:
Builders can role play climbing the mast to keep a look-out or fire the powerful cannons from the side of the ship to repel the Micro Managers — one has flick missiles and the other can shoot a net! Raise the anchors, spin the rear propellors and steer the ship to safety with a mini version of Metal Beard at the wheel. Plus, this is the only ‘The LEGO Movie’ set that includes the famous double-decker couch.
MetalBeard was voiced by ‘Parks and Recreation’ star Nick Offerman in ‘The LEGO Movie,’ and he’s included as a brick-build figure in the the set, and he’s also joined by Emmet (voiced by Chris Pratt in the film), Wyldstyle (Elizabeth Banks), Vitruvius (Morgan Freeman), Spaceman Benny (Charlie Day) and Queasy Kitty (Alison Brie).
Additional sets for ‘The LEGO Movie’ will include (as shown in order below) MetalBeard’s Duel ($34.99), Cloud Cuckoo Palace ($19.99) and Lord Business’ Evil Lair ($69.99).
