Netflix's 'Orange is the New Black' Renewed For Season 2, AlreadyKevin Fitzpatrick |
Well, this is a pleasant surprise! The first trailer for Netflix's upcoming original series 'Orange is the New Black' deftly won us over, and already the streaming service has shown a major vote of confidence with a second season order. The new series from 'Weeds' creator Jenji Kohan won't premiere until July 11, but what can we expect to see from the second season?
According to Deadline, 'Orange is the New Black' will consist of the same 13-episode order as its predecessor, likely debuting in 2014. Interestingly, Kohan's new series represents the first of Netflix's recent original releases to be renewed before airing, as 'Hemlock Grove's renewal required evaluation and renegotiation, while the breakout hit 'House of Cards' had two seasons ordered in its original deal. No word yet on 'Arrested Development,' which is also considered a candidate for further Netflix orders.
Based on the memoir by Piper Kerman, the new Netflix series stars ‘Mercy’ vet Taylor Schilling as Piper, an engaged Brooklyn dweller whose past relationship with a drug runner in college leads her to a multi-year detention in a federal penitentiary. Piper quickly immerses herself in women’s prison culture, and finds acceptance and love among an outspoken group of inmates. ‘That ’70s Show’ alum Laura Prepon takes the role of Piper’s former drug runner, while Jason Biggs portrays her fiancé across the 13-episode series. ‘Orange is the New Black’ also stars Natasha Lyonne (‘American Reunion’) and Kate Mulgrew (‘Star Trek: Voyager’).
“Jenji and her team have produced a phenomenal series and we’re eager to get a second season to our viewers,” said Cindy Holland, Vice President of Original Content at Netflix.” Kohan herself chimed in, “I am thrilled that Netflix has extended my sentence."
We've included the first trailer once again below, but what say you? Has Netflix's season 2 order of 'Orange is the New Black' convinced you to check out the new series when it premieres on July 11?
