Given what we know of Showtime's forthcoming horror drama 'Penny Dreadful,' the first teaser of the series to debut with 'Dexter''s finale didn't exactly offer up very much to chew on. Now, with production on track for 2014, Showtime has stepped up to go behind the scenes of the Josh Hartnett-Eva Green-starring series, if nothing else but to explain the significance of 'Penny Dreadful''s title!

In addition to a bit of exposition on the premise and its title's origins, Showtime's newest look at 'Penny Dreadful' at least offers up a look at filming, in its Dublin backdrop stepping in for 1890's Victorian London, which will come to feature the likes of Dracula, Dorian Gray and Frankenstein's monster. Helmed by ‘Skyfall‘ duo Sam Mendes and John Logan, Showtime describes ‘Penny Dreadful’ as:

In PENNY DREADFUL, some of literature’s most famously terrifying characters – including Dr. Frankenstein and his creature, Dorian Gray and iconic figures from the novel Dracula – become embroiled in Victorian London. The series weaves together these classic horror origin stories as the characters grapple with their monstrous alienation.

The series stars Josh Hartnett as Ethan Chandler, a “man of action and daring” who doesn’t shy away from violence; Green as Vanessa, an enigmatic beauty and “a force to be reckoned with"; Timothy Dalton as Sir Malcolm, a hardened African explorer on a deeply personal quest; Reeve Carney as Dorian Grey; Helen McCrory as spiritualist Madame Kali; ‘Skyfall”s Rory Kinnear; and ‘Doctor Who‘ vet Billie Piper as an Irish immigrant seeking to escape her dark past.
