Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ is Marvel Studios’ first foray into prime-time television. The series, based on the Stan Lee and Jack Kirby comics and created for television by Joss Whedon, Jed Whedon, Maurissa Tancharoen, stars Clark Gregg, reprising his ‘Iron Man’ and ‘Avengers’ role as secret agent Phil Coulson, who puts together a new team of S.H.I.E.L.D. agents to tackle unusual cases. The series debuted in the fall of 2013 and often interacts with Marvel’s big-screen features; its status quo shifted significantly after the events of ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’ and Marvel movie stars like Samuel L. Jackson, Jaimie Alexander, and Cobie Smulders have all made cameo appearances.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has literally dropped the Ghost Rider from Season 4 to focus on its LMD arc, but even if Gabriel Luna’s Robbie Reyes returns, it’s worth wondering what became of the other figure we met, suspected to be Johnny Blaze. Sadly, producers clarify we won’t be seeing him again, as the Rider only takes one host at a time.

The notion of Life Model Decoys has floated around Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. fandom from the very beginning, whether as an explanation for Coulson’s return, or that of Patton Oswalt’s curiously identical Koenig brothers. Now that actual “LMD”s are in the mix, Season 4 will bring Patton Oswalt back to finally explain the difference.

It isn’t hard to see at least some writing on the wall for Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., given a move to 10:00 P.M. and the announcement of a much higher-profile Marvel series for 2017, but don’t count Coulson and co. out just yet. ABC brass seems surprisingly optimistic about Season 5, claiming they’re “incredibly encouraged” by the series.

Apart from bidding Ghost Rider a fiery farewell, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. midseason finale “The Laws of Inferno Dynamics” also gave Jason O’Mara’s Jeffrey Mace a costumed debut as Marvel’s “Patriot.” There’s still something elusively sinister about the new S.H.I.E.L.D. director, for which a new 2017 press release promises we’ll discover a shocking secret behind “The Patriot.”

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. made a noteworthy gamble in Season 4, to swing a little darker by adapting a new Ghost Rider for live-action. That said, midwinter finale “The Laws of Inferno Dynamics” put a pin in the Rider to bring us a new “LMD” arc, something executive producer Jeffrey Bell admits was partly out of “financial considerations.”

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. will be back earlier in 2017 than in prior years (we miss you, Agent Carter), but it looks like “Broken Promises” has the “LMD” arc in full swing by the first photos. See for yourself, as Aida wastes little time keeping things from Fitz and Dr. Radcliffe, while a new synopsis teases another mysterious Inhuman.
