The Punisher has been making the gossip rounds as Daredevil cast and creators espouse their interest in seeing Frank Castle go up against Netflix’s Defenders. We don’t yet know if Marvel intends to rebirth the Punisher for the MCU, but should anyone don the famous skull emblem, a certain Tom Hardy would like to throw his hat in the ring.

Take this one with a complete galaxy of salt, but Collider had a chance to interview Hardy (Mad Max: Fury Road, coming soon to a theater near you!), wherein the actor addressed having to drop out of DC’s Suicide Squad. Asked about any other superhero prospects in his future, Hardy seemed notably quick to express his interest in the Punisher:

Collider: I heard Warner Bros. has a few more superhero movies, maybe one or two that they’re developing [Laughs].

HARDY: I want The Punisher… I want The Punisher, or Splinter Cell, I want something…I don’t know what I want.

You as Punisher could be very interesting.

HARDY: I’m not big enough to be The Punisher, I’m 5’9” [Laughs].

But I actually think that adds to the character.

HARDY: Frank Castle, I would love it.

Go ahead and insert the “actor expressing vague interest does not equal actual development” clause here, and we doubt if the increasingly in-demand Hardy would be caught dead playing second fiddle in a TV series. Still, Hardy is no stranger to the small-screen, with his presence in Peaky Blinders and BBC drama Taboo, and Marvel would likely do anything to have talent like Hardy’s in the MCU.

We’re hoping to see Daredevil take on The Punisher in Season 2 regardless, or barring that, any of the other Defenders series, but could any force on Earth move Tom Hardy to take the gig? Do the thing, internet! Start that rabble!
