Ben Affleck stars in Gavin O' Connor's inspirational sports drama The Way Back. The film will be the second collaboration for the actor and director, the first being O'Connor's 2016 thriller The Accountant.

The movie stars Affleck as Jack Cunningham, an ex-star student basketball player with a university scholarship who mysteriously gives it all up at the top of his game. Years later, struggling at the hands of alcoholism, he's given the opportunity to coach his alma mater's high school basketball team.

He begins a journey of healing and redemption as his demons finally rise up to meet him. While the premise isn't exactly a new one, the trailer has all the markings of a powerful, moving drama that will warm even the hardest of hearts.

Based on the trailer, The Way Back appears to be another star vehicle for Affleck, who is also set to appear next year in Adrian Lyne's Deep Water and Dees Rees' The Last Thing He Wanted.

The screenplay is written by Brad Ingelsby, who is known for the Liam Neeson action movie Run All Night. And O'Connor is no stranger to the sports drama genre, having directed 2011's The Warrior, his critically acclaimed movie about two brothers who go head to head in a mixed martial arts ring. Indeed, The Way Back seems to be in good hands.

The Way Back will be released in theaters March 6, 2020.
