Record Number of Animated Films Eligible for an Oscar This Year
Since the introduction of the Best Animated Feature Oscar at the 74th Academy Awards in 2002, we’ve seen a steady exponential increase in animated movies over the years. Pixar, and, by extent, Disney, has usually dominated the competition, with eight wins out of ten nominations, followed by DreamWorks and Disney’s animation studio. This year, we have a record 27 movies eligible for the award, and while the Academy can pick only five to nominate, for now it’s anyone’s game.
There were a slew of fantastic animated features this year, so the Academy is going to have their work cut out for them as far as picking their best five, let alone the best one. A good majority of these films — with the exception of offerings like The Angry Birds Movie and Ice Age: Collision Course — were beloved by critics and audiences alike. We’d be very surprised if Kubo and the Two Strings, Kung Fu Panda 3, The Little Prince, Miss Hokusai, Moana, The Red Turtle, or Zootopia was left out of the nominations. Seth Rogen and Evan Goldman’s raunchy talking food comedy Sausage Party has also been making headlines lately with their own Oscar campaign, though to date the Academy has pretty reliably stuck with the more family-friendly options.
