Black Lightning got fan hopes up when it started namedropping Supergirl and Arrow characters, but don’t expect Jefferson Pierce or his daughters to fight aliens just yet. Producers are walking back the potential for crossover with other CW shows, save one notable caveat.

It was only a few weeks ago that Black Lightning’s Jennifer (China Anne McClain) rattled off references to Supergirl and Arrow-verse character Vixen, despite the series seemingly taking place in its own universe. One could just as easily read Jennifer’s namedrops as reference to comic characters, but it does raise questions of how Black Lightning characters would react to said heroes appearing in the flesh. Ahead of Season 1’s finale, however, showrunner Salim Akil told Entertainment Weekly the references were not intended to foreshadow a crossover:

We are in our own world. We’re not in the Arrowverse. We’re not in the Supergirl universe. We’re in the Black Lightning universe. If there’s ever a crossover, Supergirl will come to Freeland, or Green Arrow will come to Freeland.

That last bit is particularly interesting, and would seem to rule out whether Black Lightning could join the other series for the fall 2018 crossover. Arrow, Flash and Legends all center largely around “Earth-1,” while Supergirl was established as “Earth-38,” and Black Lightning has no such designation. It’s not outside the realm of possibility that Supergirl (or for some reason, Oliver Queen) could wind up on another Earth without ruffling many feathers, but Akil says the references were merely starting “conversation with the fans.”

In the meantime, Black Lightning will air its first season finale tonight, the trailer for which you can find below. Perhaps some crossover in Season 2, then?
