Remember when Daniel Craig famously said he’s rather slash his own wrists than suit up again as 007? There’s probably a handful of reasons Craig was hesitant to return to the franchise, from the intense physical demands of the role to the time commitment to playing a celebrated, though not-all-that-creative iconic character. (Bond isn’t exactly a role that lends an actor much creative license, unlike say, Joe Bang in Logan Lucky where Craig gets to roll around in sheer kookiness.) But according to new rumors, there was another reason that Craig may have been reluctant to rejoin the franchise for Bond 25, and now, Bond 26.

Over the weekend, The Sun reported that Craig allegedly chose to return for a fifth outing as Bond only after Sam Mendes left the franchise. The newspaper’s Bizarre on Sunday column notes that sources claim Craig and Mendes ran into “creative differences” while filming Spectre which reportedly “threatened to ruin their friendship.” One source told the paper, “There were jokes that you could cut the atmosphere between them with one of Bond’s knives.”

Mendes officially exited the franchise last spring, which was no surprise following his repeated announcements that Spectre would be his final 007 endeavor. And it was only a couple weeks ago that reports came in suggesting Craig would be back for the 25th James Bond movie. But wait, we’re not done with rumors just yet – The Sun is also reporting that Craig will reportedly return for not one but two more Bond films.

According to the British paper, Barbara Broccoli allegedly talked Craig into playing Bond two more times. The script for Bond 25, which currently has the working title Shatterhand, is nearly finished according to The Sun, and Broccoli already has plans for the 26th Bond movie: a return to (perhaps remake of?) On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, the sixth Bond film from 1969 starring David Lazenby.

Nothing has been confirmed yet of course, as the studio is likely waiting to secure a new director before any official announcement. Last we heard, there were three directors in the running including Denis Villeneuve, Hell or High Water‘s David Mackenzie and ‘71 director Yann Demange. Bond 25 is expected to hit theaters in November 2019; let’s just hope Craig’s wrists stay safe for a few more years.
