DC Comics Announces Details of Streaming Service With Comics and Exclusive Series
Superman is the very first superhero, and now his parent company is launching something that could be equally groundbreaking.
It is called DC Universe, and as announced via press release it is the “first-of-its-kind digital subscription service” that will offer both DC Comics films and series and access to digital copies of DC Comics. The release boasts that “fans will enjoy all-new original live-action and animated series, classic TV series and films, a curated selection of digital comic books, breaking news, an expansive DC-centric encyclopedia, and access to exclusive merchandise.”
The original live-action series that will be exclusive to DC Universe include Titans, a “gritty take” on the Teen Titans fighting “a conspiracy that could bring Hell on Earth,” Doom Patrol, “a reimagining of one of DC’s strangest group of outcasts,” and Swamp Thing, about “Abby Arcane as she investigates what seems to be a deadly swamp-born virus in a small town in Louisiana but soon discovers that the swamp holds mystical and terrifying secrets.”
There will also be new animated series featuring Young Justice and Harley Quinn, as well as a library of older DC Comics movies and television shows like Batman: The Animated Series and the original Wonder Woman TV series starring Lynda Carter. And on the comics side, there will be a “curated selection of thousands of DC comics,” with a rotating library of titles and the ability to download to your tablet or smartphone for offline reading.
The distinguished competition over at Marvel have their own digital comics subscription service, Marvel Unlimited, but it’s limited just to comics with no film or TV component. Marvel movies and shows will be featured on Disney’s upcoming streaming service, but that will be its own separate thing (with its own separate price), whereas DC Universe bundles comics, films, and TV together in one place, which is a pretty intriguing offer for a comic-book fan.
No pricing details were available today; the beta for DC Universe will begin in August 2018; you can sign up for it at DCUniverse.com.
