We haven’t seen a trailer for Deadpool yet, but with Comic-Con fast approaching, we expect that will change very soon. What we do have is a new image of Ryan Reynolds in costume as the “merc with a mouth” and even those who aren’t fond the character have to be impressed. This is the first time a movie superhero has literally looked essentially identical to his comic-book counterpart.

Based purely on the social media campaign for Deadpool, we expect the film to stick fairly close the source. The sheer number of dumb jokes and sight gags that have filled Reynolds’ Twitter feed are totally in the spirit of this character; a mutant superhero who frequently breaks the fourth wall and speaks almost entirely in irritating jokes. In the right hands, Deadpool can be amusing. In the wrong hands, he’s irritating. The movie has its work cut out for it.

But look at that costume! It looks like it walked straight out of the ’90s! It even has a belt covered with wholly unnecessary pouches! We live in an era where Hugh Jackman has played Wolverine six times and has never put on a yellow article of clothing, but here is Deadpool, looking like, well, Deadpool!

And that’s not the only good news. Here’s producer Simon Kinberg talking about the film’s rating:

Deadpool is a hard R. It’s graphic. Nothing is taboo. You either commit to a truly outrageous boundary-pushing kind of movie or you don’t.

Deadpool opens in theaters on February 12, 2016.
