Before an audience of 55 million people (!) on Instagram, Fast & Furious actor/producer/spritual guru/wearer of sleeveless shirts Vin Diesel announced a very important bit of news: Shooting is now underway on Fast & Furious 9, the first of what’s planned to be two final films to close out the main Fast & Furious series. (There may be other spinoffs, like this summer’s Hobbs & Shaw, starring the characters previously played in the franchise by Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham.)

Don’t expect Johnson or Statham in this film, because of all their Hobbsing and Shawing. But it will feature Diesel, along with other franchise mainstays Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, and Ludacris. Here is Diesel’s video (with Rodriguez) announcing that one day was done on Fast 9:

The previous film, The Fate of the Furious, saw Diesel’s character Dom become a father after being blackmailed into working for the evil Cipher (Charlize Theron). While that installment was not one of the more critically acclaimed ones in the franchise, Fast 9 will feature the return of director Justin Lin, who made Fast & Furious: Tokyo Drift through Fast & Furious 6 (AKA most of the best ones), which is definitely good news for longtime Fast fans. But if Dom’s baby doesn’t drive a car in this one I’m going to be seriously furious.

Fast and Furious 9 opens in theaters on May 22, 2020. A tenth and final film is expected to follow the following April. Hobbs & Shaw opens on August 2, 2019.
