Last year, EA announced it had come to an agreement with THQ and the UFC to take over development of any future Ultimate Fighting Championship video games from the now-defunct publisher. EA put its Canadian development studio, best known for the NHL and Fight Night franchises, in charge of the yet-to-be-named UFC game. As a result, some sacrifices had to be made.

Since development on the UFC game began last year, EA Canada has been busy readying its take on the fast-growing sport. While EA MMA was a good effort a few years back, this new UFC game will have the names and branding to make it an even more impressive package. Unfortunately, with so much attention being put into UFC, there isn't enough manpower to go around to continue work on a new Fight Night.

“Right now, a great portion of the core of the Fight Night team are actually the team that are building UFC,” Andrew Wilson, the head of EA Sports, said in a statement to IGN. “Do I see a future for Fight Night? You know, sure. But right now, UFC is where our fighting focus is.”

A next generation Fight Night game sounds incredibly appealing, but as a devout mixed martial arts and UFC fan, it's good to see EA Canada is pooling all of its resources to make the best UFC title possible. While that means we probably won't see a Fight Night game for a few years at the least, a great UFC gaming experience could certainly go a long way in making fight fans of all types happy.

What do you think of the decision? Would you rather have a new UFC game or a new Fight Night?
