Former ‘Smallville’ Star Goes Doggy Style for FX’s ‘Wilfred’
It's a bird! It's a plane! It's a former 'Smallville' star getting work! Sometimes, things like that can be every bit as rare as an orphaned alien flying around in red and blue tights. But which actress from the former Superman series will be making a comeback?
Making her first TV appearance since her almost ten-year run as Chloe Sullivan of The CW's Superman-drama 'Smallville,' Deadline TV reveals that Allison Mack has been cast in a major recurring role on FX's surrealist canine comedy 'Wilfred,' which returns for a second season this summer. After 'Smallville's May 2011 series finale, Mack's work focused primarily on the stage rather than television.
According to the report, Mack will play an "edgy and attractive" biochemist, and major love interest for series star Elijah Wood's character Ryan Newman. The first season of 'Wilfred' dealt largely with the characters attraction to his neighbor, and Wilfred's owner Jenna (Fiona Gubellman). Hey, maybe Allison's character could figure out that chemical imbalance that causes Ryan to see Wilfred as a human in a dog costume! But then, where would all the fun be?
Mack joins a number of former 'Smallville' co-stars finding work in various TV projects, such as Erica Durance (Lois Lane)'s multiple guest appearances and upcoming headline of NBC's 'Saving Hope,' Cassidy Freeman (Tess Mercer)'s guest-arc on 'The Vampire Diaries' and role on A&E's upcoming 'Longmire,' as well as Justin Hartley's taking the lead in fall CW medical drama 'First Cut.'
Superman himself, Tom Welling, has yet to be found on TV again. However, 'Smallville' will continue for an eleventh season in a forthcoming comic-book adaptation from DC Comics.
'Wilfred's second season debuts with guest star Robin Williams on Thursday, June 28 at 10:00 p.m. on FX, following back to back episodes of the debut of Charlie Sheen's 'Anger Management.'
Good news, Allison Mack fans! Are you happy to have 'Smallville's Chloe back on TV? Do you think she'll make a good fit for 'Wilfred,' or just wind up barking in the dark? Bark up your take on 'Wilfred' season 2 or Allison Mack in the comments below!
