‘IT’ Star Jaeden Lieberher Says They Filmed an Alternate Showdown With Pennywise
IT is on track to best The Exorcist as the top-grossing horror film of all time, making it safe to assume the latest adaptation of the Stephen King classic will be just as much of a hit when it arrives on Blu-ray. In addition to the longer director’s cut recently confirmed by Andres Muschietti, the home release of IT will likely also include some deleted or alternate scenes. And according to one of the film’s young stars, we might know what at least one of those scenes could be.
While speaking with Variety, Jaeden Lieberher revealed that they filmed an alternate version of the final confrontation with Pennywise, the evil entity portrayed by Bill Skarsgard. In the theatrical version, the kids head down into the sewer system and gang up on the demonic clown, ultimately defeating him by refusing to let him feed on their fear. And it’s Stan, the most sheepish of the bunch, who deals the final blow. But in the other version Muschietti shot, it’s Lieberher’s Bill who defeats Pennywise:
I did have this scene where I climb up the tower at the end. When I’m chasing after Georgie, I climb the tower and I’m at a one-on-one confrontation with Pennywise and then I say that I’m not afraid of him, that none of the losers are afraid of him, and that’s how we beat him. But they took those lines and put toward the end, right after our big fight. So I had this whole thing where Bill Skarsgard is grabbing me and pushing me off the ledge, and I had to wear this harness. That was a more difficult scene.
Warner Bros. and New Line have yet to release official details for the IT Blu-ray, but it seems pretty plausible that this scene could end up among those included.
Lieberher, along with the rest of the young cast, will return for IT: Chapter Two, which is currently eyeing a 2018 release.
