David Robert Mitchell’s ‘It Follows’ made the festival rounds throughout 2014 and the general consensus was that it was one of the scariest films of the year. Well, technically it’s one of the scariest films of next year, since it won’t actually open in theaters until 2015. But believe us: This is one horror movie worth the wait, and the freaky new domestic trailer should do a fine job of whetting your appetite.

Taking place in an unspecified time and place, ‘It Follows’ feels less like a boilerplate tale of terror and more like a legend that has been passed down from generation to generation. The malleable setting lends a unique power to its sinister creature, a mysterious thing that relentlessly follows its victims, never moving faster than a steady walk but also never stopping or slowing down. The only way to get rid of “it” is to “pass it on” through sex. Yes, this is a movie about a sexually-transmitted monster, a metaphor that can take on all kinds of different readings throughout the film. And it’s terrifying.

Maika Monroe, who was so good in the under-appreciated ‘The Guest’ earlier this year, leads the cast of young unknowns. Like any good campfire tale or sleepover story, there are hardly any adults to be found in this movie, which means that the real stars of the show are the concept, Mitchell’s direction, and the scares. Believe us: This trailer is only the tip of the iceberg.

‘It Follows’ is set to open on March 27, 2015. Don’t miss this one.
