Despite Zack Snyder’s assertion that Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is basically a sequel to Man of Steel (it’s totally not), fans are still wondering if and when we might see Superman get a proper standalone follow-up. But Warner Bros.’ DC slate is fairly crowded with two Justice League movies and solo films for Wonder Woman, The Flash, Batman, Aquaman and Cyborg. Last we heard, WB put plans for Man of Steel 2 on “permanent hold,” while Snyder and Henry Cavill expressed interest in the sequel if they could find the time for it. And it looks like that time may be approaching.

A source close to WB tells The Wrap that Man of Steel 2 is now in “active development,” and that Superman has become “a top priority for the studio and getting the character right for audiences is of tantamount importance.” That should be comforting to some fans who haven’t been quite pleased with Snyder’s broody version of the character, though it’s unclear if WB is looking to hire a new director for the sequel.

And that could very well be the case, given persistent reports of WB’s unhappiness with Snyder — reportedly spurred by negative reviews of both Man of Steel and Batman v Superman, as well as the latter’s underwhelming performance at the box office. Although the DC movie universe isn’t entirely in disrepair (Suicide Squad opened with a record-breaking $135 million), most would agree that the franchise could use a little course-correction, consistency and better guidance.

WB has yet to officially confirm plans for Man of Steel 2, and it’s not clear exactly when it might hit theaters. Next year brings Wonder Woman’s solo debut and the first of two planned Justice League films, followed by The Flash in 2018. The studio also recently confirmed that Ben Affleck will direct and star in a solo Batman film, though they have not set a release date for that project, either.
