Back in March we saw the first teaser trailer for Masterminds, the new comedy from the director of Napoleon Dynamite, starring Kristen Wiig, Zach Galifianakis and Owen Wilson. That sounds like quite the lineup of comedic talent in a film that may very well redeem director Jared Hess after his follow-up films underperformed and were poorly-received by critics and audiences. The new, full trailer is quite promising, and even more promising are the writing credits: Eastbound and Down collaborators Jody Hill and Danny McBride.

I’m sure if Hill directed Masterminds (which, it should be noted, is based on a true story), we might have gotten something a bit darker, but as is, it looks fairly interesting. Galifianakis and Wiig star as two simple-minded armored truck drivers who join forces with some low level criminals to steal $17 million. But as you can see in the trailer, Galifianakis, Wiig, Wilson and co-star Jason Sudeikis aren’t exactly the brightest crayons in the box. So things go a bit…awry.

It’s also territory Jody Hill and Danny McBride know well, even though they’re only two of the five (!) credited writers. Still, it doesn’t hurt for Hess to have those names attached. Galifianakis is also quite good at playing these sort of small town, dopey types, and he certainly has the language down, as well as the awful He-Man hair.

Masterminds also stars Kate McKinnon, Leslie Jones, Ken Marino, Mary Elizabeth Ellis and Jon Daly, and hits theaters on August 19.
