Die-hard Zack Snyder fans who’ve been campaigning for two years for a “Snyder Cut” of the movie Justice League found their hopes buoyed in recent weeks by a seemingly organized campaign by Snyder and many of the film’s stars to signal boost the so-called “#ReleaseTheSnyderCut” campaign. Ben Affleck, Gal Gadot, and Ray Fisher all tweeted about the hashtag, which has demanded a director’s cut from Warner Bros. since the film was released in 2017, in a version largely overseen by filmmaker Joss Whedon.

When Snyder and his colleagues all started tweeting about the Snyder Cut, hardcore fans began speculating that they were hyping the film’s eventual release, possibly as a big-ticket item on Warner’s new streaming service, HBO Max. According to Variety, though, a legitimate release of the Justice League Snyder cut is “a pipe dream” because there is no Snyder cut — at least not one in any releasable form:

Logistically, however, there’s little appetite at the studio for spending the millions of dollars it would require to finish visual effects and editing work on Snyder’s version, particularly as “Justice League” was a commercial disaster. There are currently no plans to release a Snyder version either in theaters or on HBO Max.

A “knowledgeable insider” did not mince words: “There’s no way it’s ever happening,” they told Variety.

This, of course, will do little to sway Snyder’s acolytes. They will point to Snyder and company’s tweets as all the proof they need that the film could happen at some point, with enough enthusiasm and support. And that will only make the legend of the Snyder Cut grow even larger.
