Sam Raimi Is Directing a Tornado Heist Movie, Which Is All You Really Need to Know

Sam Raimi hasn’t directed a film since 2013’s Oz the Great and Powerful, and though he’s been attached to a few projects over the past year, none of them have gotten off the ground just yet. But it looks like Raimi has added another potential directing gig to his plate, and it sounds like this one is right up his alley: a heist thriller that takes place during a tornado storm. Sold!

THR reports that Raimi is developing the thriller (previously titled Stormfall) at Warner Bros., and though he hasn’t officially signed on to direct it, that seems to be the plan. The studio is currently seeking a screenwriter for the project, which takes place in the Carolinas and follows a thief and his older mentor as they attempt to pull off a heist during a particularly severe storm. Although described as a thriller, it’s hard not to laugh at the idea of a pair of guys trying to conduct a robbery while a tornado (or tornadoes, plural?) threatens their town. Then again, Raimi knows a bit about directing a solid, small town criminal thriller, having previously helmed the excellent 1998 film A Simple Plan.

Earlier this year, Raimi was attached to an American remake of French crime drama A Prophet, and not long after that, the director signed on to helm an adaptation of George Friedman’s World War 3, which offers a peek at what our world will look like in the not-too-distant future.

In addition to serving as executive producer on the Starz series Ash vs. Evil Dead, Raimi produced the upcoming horror thriller Don’t Breathe for Fede Alvarez, the director of the Evil Dead remake. That film hits theaters on August 25.
