Long before we knew Supergirl would join the fray, this year’s crossover between Arrow, Flash and Legends of Tomorrow was going to need some serious big bad to take on the combined heroes. Now, The CW confirms Todd MacFarlane’s DC “Dominators” will menace the various Earths, as EPs promise a movie-quality crossover.

The CW confirmed that its upcoming four-way crossover will borrow a bit of ‘80s inspiration to feature said “Dominators” going up against the combined DC heroes, albeit without specifying much of their origin. Says executive producer Marc Guggenheim:

This year, for our mega ‘Arrowverse’ crossover, we’re taking inspiration from a DC crossover from the late 1980s known as Invasion!, which featured an alien race called the Dominators, who’d previously vexed the Legion of Superheroes. We’re using cutting edge prosthetics and computer effects to achieve a feature film-quality look which is faithful to Invasion! artist Todd McFarlane’s interpretation of the characters.

As EW notes, the Dominators are a technologically advanced alien race who have in past recruited an alien race called the Daxamites, the same that house DC’s Mon-El, played in Supergirl Season 2 by Chris Wood. Highly suspicious, that.

Alien baddies seem appropriate for Supergirl joining the fray, but we’ll see what ground Flash and Arrow lay by their premieres next week.
