Stranded on Mars with only enough food to last about a year, Matt Damon’s astronaut Mark Watney has to do some seriously creative thinking — or, as the previous trailers suggest, he needs to “science the s—” out of his situation. In the latest clip from The Martian, Damon does a little math and feels confident in his unique botany skills.

As we’ve seen in previous trailers, Watney will indeed succeed in his mission to grow plants and make water while stranded on the inhospitable red planet. It’s hardly a spoiler, as the more entertaining and intriguing aspects of the film are not only watching him figure out how to survive, but finding out whether his original crew can get back to Mars to rescue him.

During a manned mission to Mars, Astronaut Mark Watney is presumed dead after a fierce storm and left behind by his crew. But Watney has survived and finds himself stranded and alone on the hostile planet. With only meager supplies, he must draw upon his ingenuity, wit and spirit to subsist and find a way to signal to Earth that he is alive. Millions of miles away, NASA and a team of international scientists work tirelessly to bring “the Martian” home, while his crewmates concurrently plot a daring, if not impossible, rescue mission. As these stories of incredible bravery unfold, the world comes together to root for Watney’s safe return. Based on a best-selling novel.

Damon co-stars in Ridley Scott’s new film with Jessica Chastain, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Kate Mara, Kristen Wiig, Jeff Daniels, Donald Glover and Michael Pena. The Martian hits theaters on October 2.
