Before he was an Oscar winner, Danny Boyle was best known for quirky, semi-surreal movies with bite like ‘Shallow Grave’ and ‘Trainspotting.' He looks to be returning to that form a bit with ‘Trance,' a wild crime thriller due out this spring. The trailer for the film, which stars James McAvoy, Rosario Dawson and Vincent Cassel, has just burst online and you can watch it after the break.

‘Trance’ tells the story of an art auctioneer (McAvoy) who gets mixed up with some criminals (led by Cassel) and steals a highly valuable piece of art. Unfortunately for all involved, a smash on the head leaves the dealer without a clue as to where the classy loot is stashed. It’s up to a hypnotherapist (Dawson) to dig around in his brain to retrieve the missing memory before Cassel and company get tired of waiting and start breaking things. Somewhere along the way, the line between reality and hypnotic suggestion appear to blur.

The trailer is kinetic, trippy and compelling, and the film looks for all the world like Boyle is at the top of his game. (The film was co-written by ‘Trainspotting’ and ‘Shallow Grave’ scribe John Hodge, which sweetens the pot even more.)

'Trance' will have its UK premiere in March, with a US debut hopefully hitting shortly after. Check out the first full trailer below, courtesy of MSN, and let us know what you think of the film in the comments.
