Sony’s Venom movie has one of the weirdest and best casts of a superhero movie in recent memory. It boasts Tom Hardy as the title character, and also counts Riz Ahmed, Michelle Williams, and Jenny Slate among its ranks. Now, Veep’s Reid Scott is in talks to join up, which makes one thing clear: Venom is going to be very funny.

Variety reported on Monday that Scott was likely to join the film, and also notes that Sony had no comment on the talks, so we have no idea who he’ll be playing. But with him on board this particular cast, it’s clear that this movie at least has some jokes in it — unless Sony plans to torture us by making Jenny Slate play everything extremely deadpan. Which ... actually could be hilarious.

We also don’t know anything about the plot of this movie, other than it has something to do with the iconic Spider-Man villain. Speaking of, it doesn’t look like Spidey himself is going to be in the movie, which is odd considering it’s a little tough to have Venom without a web-slinger to play off of. Venom might feature in some of the later Spider-Man movies, but the Venom movie is pretty much completely Sony’s thing. However, this is just one of a few Spideyverse movies in development (we also have Silver and Black, with Silver Sable and Black Cat), and though Peter Parker won’t be in them (at least, probably not these first ones) he’s connected to them, so there’s always a possibility. It’d be weird to have a Spideyverse without Spidey.

Venom hits theaters October 5, 2018.
