A while back we heard talk of Chris Pine potentially starring in Wonder Woman opposite Gal Gadot, but then we also heard some rumors about Pine potentially playing one of the leading superhero roles in Green Lantern Corps — that seemed to confirm that Pine was in talks to star in something for Warner Bros. and DC, and now it’s been made official. Pine will play Diana Prince’s love interest in Wonder Woman.

The Wrap reports that Pine has officially joined the cast of Wonder Woman with a multi-picture deal locking him in for sequels and other franchise opportunities (like Justice League). Steve Trevor is a longtime love interest for the iconic superhero, but he’s also a helpful protagonist who gets in on the heroic action. This is an excellent role for Pine, who has the charisma for a superhero film and the action chops to support it.

Although plot details have been scarce, the first Wonder Woman film will reportedly begin in the 1920s on the hero’s home of Paradise Island, where the Amazonian women have divided themselves into warring factions. A mysterious man arrives on the island (Pine) asking for her help, and Diana follows him to our world, where she experiences a bit of culture shock due to the vast gender inequality and lack of women’s rights.

The story may have changed a bit since then, but earlier reports indicated that the plan is for the second film to take place during World War II in the ’30s and ’40s, while the third would take Diana to present day during her time with the Justice League. It’s possible that the first and second films have been consolidated into one since the initial report.

In addition, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice will provide some backstory for the character when it hits theaters on March 25, 2016. The first solo Wonder Woman film is being helmed by Patty Jenkins and is set for release on June 23, 2017.

Pine can be seen next in Star Trek Beyond, which arrives in theaters on July 8, 2016.
