NBC's 'Hannibal': Ready to Meet the New Dr. Lecter?

NBC / Entertainment Weekly

For as much as we might have liked to see Bryan Fuller's 'Mockingbird Lane' be given a chance at a full series, likely the most intriguing of the director's upcoming efforts is that of 'Hannibal,' a modern prequelized take on the relationship between the iconic Dr. Hannibal Lecter (Mads Mikkelsen), and up and coming FBI agent Will Graham (Hugh Dancy).  The first photos of Mikkelsen's Hannibal have been revealed, but how do they taste to fans of the classic films?

Fine dining, a bloodied and geeked out Hugh Dancy, and contemplations of an enormous slab of pink meat appear to be what lies in store for NBC's upcoming Hannibal Lecter adaptation 'Hannibal.'  Courtesy of Entertainment Weekly, we've got our first look at some scans from the upcoming series, debuting at mid-season.

Initial shots of Mads Mikkelsen as the titular cannibal seem very much cut from the cloth of Anthony Hopkins' iconic portrayal, with fine taste in clothing as well as dining.  Elsewhere, Hugh Dancy's Will Graham seems a little more geek chic than we might have expected, while Laurence Fishburne as FBI head Jack Crawford seem like...well, Laurence Fishburne in another procedural.

In addition to Fishburne's own wife Gina Torres playing Crawford's wife, Bryan Fuller's ‘Hannibal’ features ‘SNL‘ alum Molly Shannon, ‘Pushing Daisies’ vet Ellen Greene, ‘Wonderfalls’ stars Chelan Simmons and Lara Jean Chorostecki as a female interpretation of ‘Red Dragon’ character Freddy Lounds. Set in the early days of Will Graham (Hugh Dancy) and Lecter (Mads Mikkelsen)’s partnership, Fuller’s envisioned series is “a love story” told across at least seven seasons. He also specified the likelihood that the third or so season would cover the story of Thomas Harris’ novel ‘Red Dragon.’

With a pilot directed by David Slade, 'Hannibal' is due on NBC mid-season.  Take a look at the photos below, and tell us what you think of Mads Mikkelsen as Hannibal Lecter in the comments!
