The critical failure of Cameron Crowe’s last cinematic venture somewhat changed the conversation around the Almost Famous director’s upcoming Showtime Roadies, and it seems Mrs. Holloway will no longer be helping with PR. Following Christina Hendricks’ earlier exit from the project, Carla Gugino has stepped in as Roadies‘ new production manager.

HBO’s geopolitical comedy The Brink seemed somewhat touch-and-go for a bit, as Dwayne Johnson’s Ballers picked up a Season 2 renewal, while Brink’s all-star cast of Tim Robbins, Jack Black and Aasif Mandvi drew closer to expiring contracts. That said, The Brink made it to the very edge with a Season 2 pickup, confirming its return for 2016.

FOX’s M. Night Shyamalan-driven Wayward Pines hasn’t quite captured audiences everywhere (the Shyamalan name hardly commands intrigue these days), though upticks in DVR viewing and moderate ratings may well pave the way to a second season. That said, will star-studded cast the likes of Matt Dillion, Carla Gugino, Terrence Howard or Melissa Leo return?

The classics of this genre featured danger and destruction on a scale a guy could wrap his head around; a hijacked airplane, a skyscraper on fire, a capsized ocean liner filling with water. But when you live by spectacle, you die by it too. And so the disasters got bigger and bigger, one movie trying to top the next, until it became an arms race of planetary devastation. One movie blows up the White House, the next one washes it away in a tidal wave. Where do you go from there? An exploding tidal wave? At this point, if your disaster movie isn’t eradicating a large portion of the globe, don’t even waste your time.

It’s The Rock versus The Fault this week, as San Andreas rumbles into movie theaters across the country. The film stars Dwayne Johnson as Chief Ray Gaines, a helicopter rescue pilot with the Los Angeles Fire Department; after Southern California is decimated by “The Big One,” Gaines and his ex-wife (Carla Gugino) must travel to San Francisco to find and save their daughter (Alexandra Daddario). Along the way, many buildings will topple, many cracks will rip the Earth apart, and many extras will die. It’s a disaster movie; that’s what happens.

HBO’s upcoming geopolitical comedy (come on, how often do you get to say that?) The Brink has already stirred up international trouble by its first teaser, but with a June 21 premiere fast approaching, the Jack Black-Tim Robbins venture has declared open season. When the news broke that Sigourney Weaver would finally throw her metaphorical hat into the TV ring for a political drama that sadly lacked any towering aliens, we drew a sad face. Now that another major sci-fi and nerd-friendly babe has joined the cast, we find ourselves with a much deeper need to watch USA's upcoming political drama. Now if they just moved the setting to space, we'd be hooked!
