Showtime's forthcoming monster drama, 'Penny Dreadful,' has been something of a question mark up to know, even with such well known stars as Josh Hartnett and Eva Green, and Sam Mendes producing a mash-up of history's great literary monsters, but wonder no more! Showtime has officially booked a May premiere and revealed our first real heart-stopping look at 'Penny Dreadful.'

Given what we know of Showtime's forthcoming horror drama 'Penny Dreadful,' the first teaser of the series to debut with 'Dexter''s finale didn't exactly offer up very much to chew on. Now, with production on track for 2014, Showtime has stepped up to go behind the scenes of the Josh Hartnett-Eva Green-starring series, if nothing else but to explain the significance of 'Penny Dreadful''s title!

Last night saw Showtime saying goodbye to two of its main attractions, pulling the plug on 'Dexter' permanently (we hope) while 'Ray Donovan' said goodnight until 2014. And even though acclaimed Emmy-winner 'Homeland' and the buzzworthy 'Masters of Sex' will kick off in less than a week's time, the cable network delivered our first sneak peek of 2014 "psychosexual horror thriller" 'Penny Dreadful.'

We were admittedly a bit in the dark over Showtime's purported monster mash-up drama 'Penny Dreadful' until the announcement finally arrived that stars Josh Hartnett and Eva Green ('300: Rise of an Empire') would take the leading roles, and today the drama continues taking shape. It had been a good long while since we heard anything from Showtime's mythical monster mash-up series, 'Penny Dreadful,' particularly since FOX announced intent of its own to feature a team-up series based on Alan Moore's 'The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.' But finally 'Penny Dreadful' has pulled ahead. Josh Hartnett and Eva Green will lead the new series, with Sam Mendes to direct.

Yesterday, we ran a rumor that director Sam Mendes and screenwriter John Logan (both of them fresh off the massive success of 'Skyfall') were working on a 'Frankenstein' TV seres for Showtime. Well, it turns out that we were half right. The name of the series is 'Penny Dreadful' and while it will feature Dr. Frankenstein and his infamous creation, they will be part of an ensemble that includes other supernatural literary characters, including Dorian Gray and key figures from Bram Stoker's 'Dracula.' For fans of great comics (and/or bad movies), it should sound very, very familiar...
