Welcome back to another installment of the Monday Morning Critic. In this space each week, I’ll be looking at the week that was in addition to the week ahead in television. The format will shift each week, as the world of TV will dictate the form and content of each piece.
In this week’s installment, I look at the premiere of The USA Network’s upcoming comedy ‘Benched,’ plus take stock of the Fall season of TV thus far.
We've already heard the major networks revealing when their shows would finally premiere for the fall 2014 season, and now ABC has finally brought up the rear. Find out when Marvel's 'Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.' will return for season 2, as will new episodes of 'Once Upon a Time,' 'Scandal,' and all your ABC favorites with the fall 2014 premiere schedule!
ABC has become the next in line to divulge their fall 2014 schedules in advance of the Upfront presentation this week, and while the list leaves off any major surprises, Marvel fans would do well to learn that new series 'Agent Carter' will indeed serve as a smaller series bridge between the first and second half of 'Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.' season 2.
If you don't watch the soapy smash hit 'Scandal,' many of Jimmy Kimmel's recent long-form skits on 'Jimmy Kimmel Live' might be lost on you. After all, the late-night host has kind of made sending up the show his bag (he's even started his own fake version of the show, 'Escandalo'). But the latest batch of 'Scandal'-centric bits have some universal appeal. Mainly this one, because it's bloopers. Who doesn't love bloopers?
While this past weekend's 'SNL' installment with Edward Norton's first-time hosting proved exceptionally uneven, even for the long-running NBC sketch comedy series, this coming Saturday's all-new outing with 'Scandal' star Kerry Washington and Eminem has hopes raised across the board. The network has released the first promos for the weekend with Washington and Taran Killiam, but are there any signs of life for 'SNL' yet?
The past few days have given rise to a bit of 'SNL' controversy for the current season's failure to included women of color either among the cast or portrayed in sketches, but the latest host should at least answer some qualms. 'Scandal' it-girl Kerry Washington will host the November 2 installment of the late-night NBC sketch comedy series, bringing back rapper Eminem as musical guest for the sixth time.
ABC has finally released their full fall premiere schedule for the 2013-2014 season, admittedly the last of the bunch, and right before the beautiful agony and madness of Comic-Con 2013. The eagerly awaited Joss Whedon pilot, Marvel's 'Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.,' will premiere on Tuesday, Sep. 24, while 'Modern Family' and 'Grey's Anatomy' have been given super-sized debuts.
Woo! Just minutes after ABC gave fans the most eagerly anticipated announcement that Marvel's 'Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.' would go to series, so too have a number of other ABC favorites been renewed. 'Castle,' 'Once Upon A Time,' 'Modern Family' 'Scandal,' 'Nashville,' 'Revenge,' 'Suburgatory' and 'Grey's Anatomy' have all earned additional season orders at the network, so find out the latest inside!
Admittedly, 'Scandal' doesn't deserve that kind of joke, given its relatively solid rating and overall critical acceptance, but we're somewhat surprised that 'The Neighbors' managed to survive the critical pounding it took in its early days. Regardless, ABC has opted to pick up both the Shonda Rhimes political thriller and the wacky extraterrestrial comedy up for full seasons, leaving the fate of its other dramas uncertain. So who's still on the bubble?
