The Always Sunny gang managed to power through a solid twelve years on FX and FXX, so it wasn’t any surprise star Glenn Howerton opted for a small break before the next two. That said, we may be bereft of Sunny all through 2018, as star Kaitlin Olson confirms the Paddy’s Pub gang will take a pre-Season 13 hiatus.

The Season 12 Sunny finale in March brought with it the surprising revelation that Glenn Howerton’s Dennis had a secret family in North Dakota; eventually precipitating his exit from the group. Howerton himself has a new NBC Seth Meyers-produced comedy pilot with Patton Oswalt, and mentioned a possible “extended hiatus” to accommodate the cast’s other projects.

Speaking with TVGuide, co-star Kaitlin Olson confirmed that Sunny Season 13 would take a backseat to her FOX comedy The Mick, which may not wrap shooting until spring 2018:

We ended up pushing our next season a year because we were all busy with separate projects this year. So at the end of this coming shooting season of The Mick I’ll step right into Sunny after that.

Assuming reports of The Mick wrapping in spring prove accurate, FX might either shift Sunny to the fall/winter to keep a 2018 window, or perhaps move to early 2019 altogether. FXX themselves say production and premiere dates have yet to be determined.

Sad as we are to consider a 2018 devoid of Sunny, could the show use a break to get everyone primed for a Paddy’s Pub return?
