It’s difficult to know what to make of mother!, the latest thriller from Darren Aronofsky. The plot description sounds like a home invasion thriller, the posters pay homage to Rosemary’s Baby, and the trailers have led some to speculate that Aronofsky’s film could be anything from a vampire movie (yeah, right) to a sorta-remake of the aforementioned Roman Polanski classic. Whatever Aronofsky is up to, at least a couple of his famous friends loved it enough to share their reactions on Twitter last night following a private screening.

Anthony Bourdain and Mylo Carbia, who attended a private screening held for Aronofsky’s friends and family. The chef and TV personality definitely enjoyed
mother! more than
Baby Driver, asserting that Aronofsky’s film will “upset the f— out of people” — a glowing recommendation, for sure:

Horror writer Mylo Carbia shared a lengthier response on her Twitter page, calling mother! a “masterpiece” that’s bound to be “more controversial than
A Clockwork Orange”:

…And that pretty much lines up with the little I’ve heard about Aronofsky’s latest, which isn’t exactly the film Paramount is selling in those trailers. There’s much more to the plot than they’re letting on (I think that’s a good thing), and according to at least one source, it has an insane ending that’s going to be the subject of intense post-viewing discussion — which may explain Carbia’s comparison to A Clockwork Orange in terms of controversy.

mother! stars Jennifer Lawrence, Javier Bardem, Michelle Pfeiffer and Ed Harris, and hits theaters on September 15.
