For months now we've known that 'Dexter''s eighth and final season would feature Charlotte Rampling as visiting neuropsychiatrist Dr. Evelyn Vogel, arriving to assist Miami Metro with a case. Naturally, she finds herself fixated on the psychopathic Dexter Morgan, but does the character's significance run much deeper? What new spoilers from 'Dexter' season 8 have emerged that add a tremendous piece to the puzzle?

Those looking to keep 'Dexter''s final season unspoiled, beware, as it seems Dr. Evelyn Vogel's history with our title character runs far deeper than her initial description would admit. According to Entertainment Weekly, Vogel herself created the infamous "code" that Harry Morgan bestowed on Dexter to channel his murderous instincts!

More than that, Dexter's "maker" of sorts comes to Miami in search of his assistance, as she has become the target of the department's newest serial killer, "The Brain Surgeon." EW was on hand during filming to talk to Rampling about her role, wherein the actress explained her significance to Dexter's origins:

She decided Dexter was not going to be considered a monster and wasn’t going to be considered mentally insane and not be put into an institution. Dexter is a bit of a guinea pig. He’s possibly one of her success stories if you think The Code is acceptable.

Vogel's appearance in Dexter's life may well lead to a complicated position with Deb as well, considering her downward spiral in the wake of LaGuerta's murder, and conflicted feelings she shares for her brother. As revealed in flashback, Vogel and Harry often struggled over how to channel Dexter's dark side, proving Deb may have more in common with her father than she realized.

In addition to Rampling, ‘Dexter’ season 8 will feature appearances from ‘The Shield’'s Kenny Johnson, the return of Yvonne Strahovski‘s Hannah McKay, ‘24‘ villain Julian Sands as a wealthy international businessman, Bethany Joy Lenz (‘One Tree Hill’) as Dexter’s new neighbor Cassie and Darri Ingolfsson (‘Last Resort‘) as her antique-dealing love interest, ‘Entourage‘'s Rhys Coiro as a bail jumper on Deb’s radar, ‘The Walking Dead‘ star Nick Gomez as a hitman that goes up against Deb, and ‘The Boondock Saints’ star Sean Patrick Flanery as ex-cop-turned-private-eye Jacob Elway.

'Dexter' will premiere its final run on June 30, but what say you? Are you interested to delve deeper into Dexter's history across the final season? How do you think the series will come to a conclusion? Watch the latest featurette below, and give us your take in the comments!
