‘Doctor Who’ Confirms Season 10 ‘Stuck With’ Matt Lucas’ Nardole
Doctor Who fans have enjoyed Matt Lucas’ bumbling Nardole since his introduction in last year’s Christmas special, so much so that the character was brought back for this month’s “The Return of Doctor Mysterio,” and beyond into Season 10. Now, reports confirm Lucas’ character will be “stuck with” The Doctor for awhile as a defacto companion of sorts.
Per io9 and SciFi Now, Lucas admitted as much after a recent screening of the 2016 Christmas special, declaring “You’re stuck with me for a little bit” in Season 10. Nardole won’t act as an official companion in the same vein as Pearl Mackie’s Bill, but rather a “valet” of sorts over the season. Says Lucas:
I’m there for a while, but the nice thing was the first episode – and I assumed it was going to be my only episode – was last year [‘The Husbands Of River Song’], and I was a bit broader last year, and over the course of a series it allows you to explore more aspects of a character. So it’s been fun.
You learn a little bit more about me and I’m a bit of a thorn in [the Doctor’s] side. I have a job to do, but I think you regret giving me that job.
In the meantime, so reads the full synopsis for the December 25 outing, which will also screen in select theaters:
This Christmas sees the Doctor join forces with a masked Superhero for an epic New York adventure. With brain-swapping aliens poised to attack, the Doctor and Nardole link up with an investigative reporter and a mysterious figure known only as The Ghost. Can the Doctor save Manhattan? And what will be revealed when we see behind the mask?
Peter Capaldi stars as the Doctor, Matt Lucas (Bridesmaids, Little Britain) as Nardole, Justin Chatwin (Orphan Black, Shameless) as Grant and Charity Wakefield (Wolf Hall, The Player) as an investigative journalist.
The special is written by Steven Moffat, executive produced by Brian Minchin, produced by Peter Bennett and directed by Ed Bazalgette (Poldark).
Elsewhere, in addition to Michelle Gomez’s likely return as Missy, Season 10 will also feature Jekyll & Hyde star Stephanie Hyam in a minor role. Pearl Mackie will also joined in the role of new companion Bill, while Peter Capaldi has suggested Jenna Coleman’s Clara might return in some form.
As to the next series, Capaldi himself has only officially signed through the coming tenth season, despite having been asked to return after Steven Moffat’s last season in spring 2017. Following Moffat’s exit, Chris Chibnall will sub in as the new head writer and executive producer, to begin after Season 10.
We’ll see more soon, but check out “The Return of Doctor Mysterio” in sneak peeks below, and stay tuned.
