As skeptical as many fans rightfully have been about Josh Trank’s reboot of Fantastic Four, there’s something sort of appealing about the film’s aesthetic and tone from the various teasers and trailers. In keeping with 20th Century Fox’s recent X-Men films, Fantastic Four looks as though it walks the line between the fun, vibrant world of the MCU and the grittier, stylized approach of Zack Snyder’s DCU.

The latest clip from Fantastic Four reinforces that, blending excitement and suspense with a dash of humor, while also showing off the chemistry between our main characters. In the clip, the team prepares to make history by crossing over into another dimension — it’s in that dimension that they’ll be gifted (or in Doom’s case, cursed) with new abilities.

It’s understandable for fans to be skeptical of the reboot, given the disappointing previous installments, Fox’s delay in promoting the film, and the persistent rumors of issues on set — none of which have done much to inspire confidence. I feel alone in saying that I’m intrigued. At the very least, Trank’s film looks different from other superhero films and has a certain sci-fi potential about it.

Here’s the synopsis:

Fantastic Four offers a contemporary re-imagining of Marvel’s original and longest-running superhero team. The story centers on four young outsiders who teleport to an alternate and dangerous universe, which alters their physical form in shocking ways. Their lives irrevocably upended, the team must learn to harness their daunting new abilities and work together to save Earth from a former friend turned enemy.

Fantastic Four stars Miles Teller, Michael B. Jordan, Kate Mara, Jamie Bell and Toby Kebbell, and hits theaters on August 7.
