‘Fast and Furious 7’ Trailer: This Time It Ain’t Just About Being Fast
‘Fast and Furious 7’—the next installment in the best film franchise that isn’t Marvel—is coming this spring after some lengthy delays (it was originally scheduled to open last summer), and based on this new trailer, we couldn’t be more excited.
What’s interesting about this film is that the ‘Fast’ family isn’t chasing down some bad guy, they’re the ones being hunted by the bad guy. It’s Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham), the brother of Owen Shaw, the villain from ‘Fast and Furious 6’ who was blown up in a giant fireball by Dom, Brian and pals. He’s out for revenge and our team of heroes is forced to go on the run; or, on the drive in this case.
While the death of Paul Walker is never directly referenced or hinted at, there is one touching moment where Walker’s character says to Vin Diesel, “So, what’s the plan, Dom?”, who responds “One last ride.” The pause on Walker for a brief moment, because we all know the unfortunate ending of this film. (Let’s forget for a moment that the ‘Fast and Furious’ movies have been pulling the “one last ride” bit since the very first movie.)
We still don't know a ton about the plot of the movie (above what we already mentioned above), and the film's official synopsis says only that the film will continue “the global exploits in the unstoppable franchise built on speed.” OK, fair enough. While previous ‘Fast and Furious’ movies have focused on one locale (‘Fast Five’ in Brazil, and ‘Fast and Furious 6’ in London), ‘Fast and Furious 7’ looks to be more of a globe-hopping affair with scenes in California, Abu Dhabi and Tokyo.
There’s a lot to love here, whether it’s The Rock and Jason Statham punching on each other, or Ronda Rousey and Michelle Rodriguez punching on each other or Kurt Russell just being in this movie. It's got all the beats of a great ‘Fast and Furious’ trailer—fast cars, big guns, beautiful women, bruising fights, Vin Diesel mumbling about family—and raises the stakes to new levels.
