FX period drama 'The Americans' has kept reasonably quiet heading into season 3 next year (state secrets, and all), but following a presence at New York Comic-Con 2014 this past weekend, the Soviet spy series has unclassified a rather large addition. Oscar nominee and Tony-winner Frank Langella will join 'The Americans' season 3 cast, but as whom?

Per the network's official press release, 'Superman Returns' and 'Frost/Nixon' star Langella will recur heavily as “Gabriel,” former KGB handler to Philip (Matthew Rhys) and Elizabeth (Keri Russell), who comes out of retirement to take back responsibility for overseeing the two KGB operatives from after their previous handler Claudia (Margo Martindale).

Fans of the FX drama will recall that despite her somewhat regular presence in the first season, Martindale took a much smaller role in season 2 for her work in CBS sitcom 'The Millers.' The character survived, though producer seem understandably to have desired a stronger presence from Philip and Elizabeth's handler in season 3.

Said producers Joe Weisberg and Joel Fields:

We’ve been huge fans of Frank’s work for a long time, and it’s been such a pleasure getting to know Frank himself in the beginning stages of working together on the character of Gabriel. We look forward to a great season together, and to what we’re sure will be a phenomenal creative collaboration.

'The Americans' will return for season 3 in January 2015, but what do you think? Does the latest addition to FX's spy drama have you primed to delve further into the mystery next year?
