Awhile ago we had heard that 'Her' and 'Inherent Vice' star Joaquin Phoenix was in talks for the role of Doctor Strange in Marvel's upcoming film, and all signs seemed to suggest that this could actually happen. However, the latest development is that talks with the Oscar-nominated actor have officially ended, and Marvel is already looking elsewhere.

What a shame! While it's certainly not surprising to see Phoenix officially drop out of the running -- those multi-movie Marvel contracts are not everyone's cup of tea -- it would've been cool to see such a renowned talent tackle a role like this, keeping in line with Marvel's track record for casting notable stars in these superheroic roles. Oh well.

So, who is Marvel looking at now? Deadline, which first reported this latest update, confirms that the rumor of Ethan Hawke potentially picking up the gig is entirely false. If you recall, earlier names said to be on the shortlist to play the Sorcerer Supreme at one time were Tom Hardy, Benedict Cumberbatch and Jared Leto, while 'Boardwalk Empire' and 'American Hustle' star Jack Huston was rumored to be a recent consideration.

Regardless of who ultimately gets the job, casting 'Doctor Strange' is a top priority for Marvel. Scott Derrickson is already at the helm with Jason Spaihts attached as a writer, and, while the studio still has yet to make an official announcement, word is that the standalone film will hit theaters on July 8, 2016. Considering 'Captain America: The Winter Soldier' name dropped Stephen Strange, we'll be seeing this movie sooner than later.
