Part of the original 151 Pokemon, Jynx is humanoid in appearance and immediately drew criticism for appearing to wear what some thought was blackface. In an article entitled 'Politically Incorrect Pokemon,' author Carole Boston Weatherford said the character looked like "an overweight drag queen incarnation of Little Black Sambo." Moreover, she argued, Jynx "clearly denigrates African Americans, particularly black women" with its "jet-black skin, huge pink lips" and "gaping eyes." Quick to negate the criticism, Nintendo changed the color of the character's face from black to purple in future designs, but the damage had already been done. Jynx would forever be known as the first racist Pokemon.
