We weren’t terribly surprised when Versace: American Crime Story overtook Katrina as the next installment, but it seems the New Orleans-set chapter may have fallen apart altogether. Directors say the FX project is “stalled,” calling into question whether it films at all.

The Hollywood Reporter spoke with producing director Anthony Hemingway, who claimed “[Katrina] just kind of got stalled. We’re all standing by waiting to find out what’s happening.” Not only that, but Hemingway added that very little had been done, and no preparations for filming had begun, despite the many cast additions.

Hemingway noted that whether Katrina still happened was up to creator Ryan Murphy, who himself may have drifted away from the project in favor of Versace:

I just think that was [what was] at play. It was the burden of hand syndrome. [Versace] needed a lot of attention, so I think he just made the decision to do that. Instead of do what was intended, which was doing them parallel at the same time, he chose to do them one at a time.

Elsewhere of the Katrina season, we know Dennis Quaid will take the role of President George W. Bush, alongside Matthew Broderick as FEMA Director Michael D. Brown and Annette Bening in the role of Kathleen Blanco, Governor of Louisiana. American Crime Story Season 2 will draw its Katrina inspiration from Douglas Brinkley’s The Great Deluge, with franchise stars Sarah Paulson, Cuba Gooding Jr. and Courtney B. Vance expected to return.

It’s likely Ryan Murphy will come forth with a Katrina update soon, but will The Assassination of Gianni Versace live up to People v. O.J. Simpson in the meantime?
