Despite opening against the juggernaut that is 50 Shades of Grey, the wildly transgressive and well-reviewed Kingsman: The Secret Service still held its own at the box office, making enough money to ensure talk of a potential sequel. And here we are, about to talk about a Kingsman 2 and whether or nor Colin Firth will reprise his role as the dashing and deadly gentleman spy, Harry Hart. Massive spoilers lurk below.

Anyone who has actually seen Kingsman knows that Firth returning for a sequel seems awfully unlikely. After all, he did get a bullet in the brain courtesy of Samuel L. Jackson about halfway through the movie. Still, Firth is the highlight in a film with many highlights and we’re talking about a movie universe where people get exploding chips put in their brains and cellphones can turn people into homicidal maniacs. Resurrecting Harry is not entirely out of the question.

Director Matthew Vaughn says as much in a new interview with USA Today, saying that that the sequel (and Harry’s potential resurrection) depends entirely on the film doing the right business:

A lot of people are very upset that Colin might not be in the sequel but I’m coming up with ideas at the moment. If people buy tickets in America, I’ve got a feeling we’ll figure out a way for having Colin back.

While we would definitely watch and enjoy a sequel starring Taron Egerton’s rough-around-the-edges Eggsy, Firth’s old school badass is too much fun to consider losing. Egerton has charm to spare, but only Firth could pull off that ultra-violent modern Roger Moore thing. We can think of a dozen dumb, offhand ways to bring him back from the dead, so Vaughn and his co-writer Jane Goldman should have a handful of actually good ideas.

Still, Vaughn makes it clear that any potential sequel would still put Eggsy front and center:

The sequel will be ‘This is the modern-day gentleman spy.’ Because Harry isn’t. Harry even says, ‘There is a reason why we’ve developed weak chins.’ He said that meaning, ‘Look at us, we need to get new blood into this system,’ and that’s what Eggsy is. I joke that we’ve made the prequel to the Eggsy movie.

If there's going to be a Kingsman 2, we will probably start hearing some real rumblings in the weeks ahead. If it can survive a few more weeks of battle with Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele, it will earn a sequel.
