'Lost River,' formerly titled 'How to Catch a Monster,' is Ryan Gosling's directorial debut and stars the likes of Christina Hendricks, Matt Smith and Fiz from 'Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.' (Iain De Caestecker) in a story about a teenage boy who stumbles across an underwater town. Too bad the first teaser trailer doesn't reveal any of this except for some of the casting -- all it wants you to do is look at Matt Smith's muscles, damn it!

'Lost River' will premiere at this week's Cannes Film Festival with an expected theatrical release later this year, and the first trailer takes the surrealist approach, invoking fiery imagery (of a burning bike, of a burning house, of a burning fire pit) along with the former 'Doctor Who' star pleading through his rap for you to look at his muscles. Please, please, Matt Smith. You don't have to beg.

In the film, Hendricks plays a single mother to Caestecker's Bones, and the family is trying to stay afloat in a dilapidated town, while other cast members include Saoirse Ronan and Eva Mendes. Said Gosling of his debut effort, "This film was, in a lot ways, a gift from the directors I've been working with over the last few years. I've gone between acting in films completely based in reality with Derek Cianfrance to the fevered dreams of Nicolas Winding Refn. I think I've vacillated between these two extremes because my own sensibilities as a filmmaker lay somewhere in-between."
