See the Cast of ‘My Girl’ Then and Now
Released in 1991, 'My Girl' tells the story of 11 year-old Vada Sultenfuss (Anna Chlumsky), who is coming of age in the summer of 1972 with her best friend, Thomas J., played by young star Macaulay Culkin. The film, which also reunited 'Trading Places' stars Jamie Lee Curtis and Dan Aykroyd, became an instant classic and a hit among critics and audiences alike. 23 years later, we revisit the cast of this beloved movie and see what they're up to now.
Anna Chlumsky, Vada Sultenfuss
Then: Anna Chlumsky, who previously had a minor role in 'Uncle Buck,' landed her first major role in 'My Girl' as Vada, a young tomboy and hypochondriac whose mother died during childbirth. Vada is obsessed with death and her best friend is an awkward boy named Thomas J. Chlumsky reprised the role of Vada a few years later in 'My Girl 2,' and also appeared in 'Gold Diggers: The Secret of Bear Mountain.'
Now: From 1999 to 2005, Chlumsky took some time off from acting and attended the University of Chicago, where she received a BA in International Studies. After spending some time working in publishing, she returned to acting with roles in 'In the Loop' and guest spots on '30 Rock' and 'White Collar.' She currently plays Amy Brookheimer on the hit HBO series 'Veep,' created by 'In the Loop' director Armando Iannucci, and has also appeared on 'Army Wives' and 'Hannibal.'
Dan Aykroyd, Harry Sultenfuss
Then: Former 'SNL' star Dan Aykroyd, also known for his roles in 'Ghostbusters' and 'The Blues Brothers,' played Harry, Vada's widower father who runs a funeral home and often ignores his daughter. Aykroyd would also reprise his role for the sequel.
Now: Aykroyd went on to appear in films like 'Coneheads,' 'Tommy Boy,' 'Blues Brothers 2000,' and 'Pearl Harbor.' He also starred in the Adam Sandler comedies '50 First Dates' and 'I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry,' and has recently starred in the films 'The Campaign' and 'Behind the Candelabra.' Aykroyd is known for his fascination with UFOs, and in 2005 he produced a DVD titled 'Dan Aykroyd: Unplugged on UFOs,' in which he in interviewed for 80 minutes on his beliefs. He also has a line of vodka called Crystal Head Vodka, and is currently working on the third 'Ghostbusters' film.
Jamie Lee Curtis, Shelly DeVoto
Then: Jamie Lee Curtis, who previously appeared with Dan Ayrkoyd in 'Trading Places,' played Shelly DeVoto, the make-up artist who works at Harry's funeral home. She becomes friends with Vada and eventually starts dating Harry.
Now: The star of the horror classic 'Halloween' would go on to appear in 'True Lies' and 'House Arrest' before reprising her role for 'Halloween H20' and 'Halloween: Resurrection.' In 2004 she reunited with Dan Aykroyd again for the holiday comedy 'Christmas with the Kranks,' and has also appeared in 'Freaky Friday' and 'You Again.' More recently, Curtis lent her voice to the animated film 'From Up on Poppy Hill' and made an appearance in the 'Veronica Mars' film. She also has a recurring role on 'New Girl' as the mother of Zooey Deschanel's character.
Macaulay Culkin, Thomas J. Sennett
Then: Macaulay Culkin played Thomas J., Vada's nerdy best friend who is allergic to just about everything. Culkin was known for his roles in 'Home Alone' and 'Uncle Buck.'
Now: Culkin went on to appear in the second 'Home Alone' film, as well as 'The Good Son,' 'The Pagemaster,' and 'Richie Rich.' He took a little time off from acting before resurfacing with more grown-up roles in films like 'Party Monster' and 'Saved!'. He's also lent his voice to the animated series 'Robot Chicken,' co-created by his 'Party Monster' co-star Seth Green. These days he's focusing more on art and music, and is a member of the band The Pizza Underground, which performs covers of The Velvet Underground classics, with the lyrics re-purposed as songs about pizza.
Richard Masur, Phil Sultenfuss
Then: Richard Masur played Phil Sultenfuss, Harry's brother and Vada's uncle, who lives just down the street and often comes by to help the family out with things. Masur was known for roles in 'The Thing,' 'Risky Business,' and the TV miniseries adaptation of Stephen King's 'It.'
Now: Masur reprised his role for the sequel, and has also appeared in 'The Man Without a Face,' 'Six Degrees of Separation,' 'Multiplicity,' and 'Palindromes.' He's had guest roles on the HBO shows 'Bored to Death' and 'Girls,' and has also recently guest-starred on 'Blue Bloods' and 'Elementary.'
Griffin Dunne, Mr. Bixler
Then: Vada is deeply infatuated with her teacher Mr. Bixler, played by Griffin Dunne, known for roles in 'An American Werewolf in London' and 'After Hours.'
Now: Dunne has since appeared in 'Quiz Show,' '40 Days and 40 Nights,' 'Stuck on You,' and 'Snow Angels.' He's also directed the films 'Addicted to Love,' 'Practical Magic,' 'Fierce People,' and 'The Accidental Husband.' He's recently starred in 'Broken City' and 'Dallas Buyers Club,' and directed and co-stars in the new film 'Rob the Mob' with Michael Pitt and Andy Garcia.
