So far, audiences haven’t flocked to Quentin Taratino’s latest film, The Hateful Eight, as they have with his last two films. Both Inglourious Basterds and Django Unchained grossed over $120 million, but The Hateful Eight looks like it will be lucky to get to $50 million. This despite the 70mm roadshow version that encouraged audiences to see the film in theaters. A large part of the disappointing box-office take so far, is due in no small part to opening up against Star Wars: The Force Awakens, aka the Biggest Movie of All-Time, but Tarantino is not backing off his latest movie, instead doubling down and moving forward with plans to mount a stage production of his latest movie in London and New York.

Tarantino has spoken about the potential to adapt The Hateful Eight into a play before, but Tarantino tends to talk about a lot of things and you’re never really sure just how serious he is. How serious is he? “Quentin is serious about bringing it to the stage,” star Jennifer Jason Leigh tells The Evening Standard, though she cautions, “we’d have to work out how to have all that blood on the stage.”

Samuel L. Jackson, who knows Tarantino as well as about anyone, added, “We have had discussions about doing it as a play in London. In fact my initial thought, which I expressed to Quentin, was we do it in the West End, create an international sensation and then bring it to Broadway.” Whether or not the entire cast would return for a full run, or just a limited one-time event remains to be seen. “I’ve always wanted to do something in the West End but we’ll have to see,” says Jackson.

There is some precedent for The Hateful Eight to make it to the stage. Beyond reading very much like a play, after the first draft of the Hateful Eight script leaked online, Tarantino and the cast performed a live-read in Los Angeles. (Tarantino also briefly flirted with being a Broadway star himself, appearing alongside Marisa Tomei in the 1998 adaptation of Wait Until Dark.)

For his part, Tarantino says, “don’t be surprised” to see The Hateful Eight on stage, perhaps even sometime very soon. “Like sooner rather than later, like later this year.”
