Kurt Sutter Goes Behind-the-Scenes of ‘Anarchy’ Spinoff ‘Mayans MC’
Whether or not FX was ripe to reenter the world of Sons of Anarchy with Mayans MC, more pressing was if Kurt Sutter was the man to take us there. Now, the former Sons showrunner speaks out on placing a Latino lens over the FX biker drama in a new BTS video.
Sutter began a new production diary from the April 4 shoot, in the process describing his reentry into the world of bikers, as well as the influences and technical advisers he’d brought on to portray the Mayans culture. Former Sons star Emilio Rivera exerts a heavy influence, while Sutter says the plan remains for him to step back after the pilot.
Elsewhere of the new series, J.D. Pardo will play EZ Reyes, a prospect in the Mayan MC charter on the California and Mexico border who “struggles with his desire for vengeance against the cartel as well as his need for respect from the women he loves.” Also cast are Clayton Cardenas as EZ’s brother Angel, John Ortiz as club president Esai “Taino” Osorio, and Edward James Olmos as EZ’s father, along with Andrea Londo, Sarah Bolger and Jacqueline Obradors.
So reads the first Mayans MC synopsis:
Mayans MC is set in a post Jax Teller world, where EZ Reyes, a prospect in the Mayan MC charter on the Cali/Mexi border, struggles with his desire for vengeance against the cartel, and his need for respect from the women he loves.
Sutter co-wrote the new project with producing partner Elgin James, and directs the pilot as an executive producer. FX previously described the series as a “dark, visceral family drama that takes a new look at the most American of icons, the 1% outlaw, this time reflected through a Latino lens.” The present day setting could allow for occasional crossover with surviving Sons of Anarchy characters, as well.
More BTS entries will arrive in the coming weeks, but what do we make of Mayans MC so far?
