What Were Stan Lee’s Least Favorite Marvel Movies?
Stan Lee has been a good company man for Marvel - he's appeared in pretty much every modern Marvel movie ever made and has generally be a positive brand ambassador. But geez, even Stan Lee kinda hated the 'Fantastic Four' movies...
Lee, the man credited with co-creating characters like Spider-Man, the Hulk, the X-Men, the Fantastic Four, Iron Man, Thor and Daredevil, was at the 2012 Fan Expo in Canada (via Geek Tyrant) and was asked about the Marvel movies. Obviously Stan had no gripes with 'The Avengers' or 'The Amazing Spider-Man' but he was asked which of the Marvel movies he didn't like.
I would have liked the Hulk to be smaller in the first two movies, and I didn't like the way Doctor Doom was portrayed in Fantastic Four. Now with Daredevil, they just wrote the whole thing wrong. They made him too tragic. That's not the way I wrote him.
Beating up on 'Daredevil' and the 'Fantastic Four' and 'Hulk' movies seems like he picked some easy targets as we can all admit that those five movies didn't live up to their potential. It would've been refreshing to see Stan call out 'Iron Man 2' or 'Thor' even but he wasn't going to touch the 'Avengers' franchise, lest he gets cut off from his Marvel Studios connections.
But Lee does bring up some valid points on those movies. Doctor Doom was all wrong. And the way 'Daredevil' was written was very different from some of the classic storylines from the comics. Unfortunately, Marvel had to sell off the movie rights to many of their properties to save themselves from bankruptcy and even get to the point where they could make the 'Iron Man' or 'Avengers' movies and it's some of those deals that are producing the weakest of the Marvel films.
It's interesting to note that all three of the franchises Stan Lee was talking about are all in various forms of reboot, some ('Fantastic Four') closer than others. But will they be any good and atone for the sins of the originals? What do YOU think is the worst modern Marvel movie?
