Riz Ahmed Appreciates Ed Skrein Exiting the ‘Hellboy’ Movie
Ed Skrein’s casting into and then exit from the new Hellboy movie was a surprising, but necessary act of solidarity with his non-white comrades in the movie industry. Skrein admitted, in his statement, that he wasn’t aware that the character in question, Major Ben Daimio, was a person of color in Mike Mignola’s comics, and also said that he hoped the movie could find a different actor who better fit the bill.

‘Hellboy’ First Look: David Harbour Is Big, Red, and Scary
The Hellboy movie has had an intriguing start, with the disappointing news that Guillermo del Toro wasn’t finishing his trilogy, to a bunch of exciting casting announcements, to one not-so-exciting cast addition, to that actor backing out, to a better choice being in talks (which were confirmed today). More good news: we finally know what David Harbour’s Son of the Fallen One looks like. And he’s pretty scary.

Selma Blair on ‘Hellboy’ Remake: ‘My Job Is Done’
While most of the articles regarding the new Hellboy remake have focused on the lack of involvement by Ron Perlman and Guillermo del Toro, it’s worth nothing that Selma Blair’s Liz Sherman was also an integral part of del Toro’s franchise. Neither fully human nor fully supernatural, Blair’s character served as an important transition point between the film’s two worlds (as well as the main love interest of the titular character). So maybe it’s about time we poured one out for Selma Blair as well; after all, she had just as much involvement in the success of the franchise as anyone.

The new Hellboy movie hit a big of a snag a couple weeks ago when it cast Deadpool villain Ed Skrein as canonically Japanese-American character major Ben Daimio. Skrein has since stepped down from the role after he realized the implications of him playing a character of color, and the movie went back to square one to find a replacement. Good news: they have. Extremely good news: it’s Lost star Daniel Dae Kim.

Neil Marshall’s Hellboy movie was off to such a good start (after a somewhat rocky beginning that made it look as if the franchise was unceremoniously whisked out of Guillermo del Toro’s hands). Each new cast addition was more exciting than the last — until a character of color was whitewashed, and all hell(boy) broke loose.

Hellboy: Rise of the Blood Queen is just chugging along, and it’s found yet another cast member to add to its roster. Ed Skrein, whom we last saw on our screens as bad dude Ajax in Deadpool (and as Game of Thrones’ Daario Naharis Mark 1), has been cast as B.P.R.D. Major Benjamin Daimio.

The Hellboy reboot is happening, and while it’s difficult to remove Guillermo del Toro’s unfinished version of the character’s tale from our minds, the new movie is setting up quite an exciting cast roster to make up for it. Today brings news that American Honey star Sasha Lane is in final negotiations to join Hellboy: Rise of the Blood Queen.

Okay, yes, it’s disappointing that Mike Mignola and co. opted to find someone other than Guillermo del Toro and Ron Perlman to make a Hellboy movie, but Neil Marshall’s reboot continues to sound really, really exciting. We recently learned that the subtitle of the movie, which will star David Harbour as the titular son of the Fallen One, will be “Rise of the Blood Queen,” which, if you’s familiar, recalls one very cool comic arc with one very scary villain. Some more good news: Milla Jovovich has just been cast as the so-called Blood Queen, also known as the all-powerful witch Nimue.

Ian McShane is on quite a roll these days. From his appearance on the last season of Game of Thrones, to his minor but o less enigmatic character in the John Wick movies, to the ever-possible Deadwood revival, to playing a literal deity in Starz’s American Gods, McShane has been getting all the good stuff lately. And now we can add to that list Neil Marshall’s Hellboy reboot.
