The DMV is run by sloths.

This is the comic premise of one scene from Disney’s upcoming animated movie Zootopia, and not me editorializing on the state of our world’s Department of Motor Vehicles. Although I guess the two things aren’t mutually exclusive.

And damn, this gag is really funny. The sloth’s face slowly shifting from passivity to laughter is great. This new Zootopia trailer doesn’t fully explore the movie’s premise (a world where animals run everything, sorta like Cars but with animals instead of cars), but it gives you a very clever taste of what the filmmakers plan to do with that premise.

Here’s the official synopsis from Disney:

The modern mammal metropolis of Zootopia is a city like no other. Comprised of habitat neighborhoods like ritzy Sahara Square and frigid Tundratown, it’s a melting pot where animals from every environment live together—a place where no matter what you are, from the biggest elephant to the smallest shrew, you can be anything. But when rookie Officer Judy Hopps (voice of Ginnifer Goodwin) arrives, she discovers that being the first bunny on a police force of big, tough animals isn’t so easy. Determined to prove herself, she jumps at the opportunity to crack a case, even if it means partnering with a fast-talking, scam-artist fox, Nick Wilde (voice of Jason Bateman), to solve the mystery.

I didn’t recognize either voice from the trailer alone, but Goodwin and Bateman are perfectly suited to their two characters; the rest of the cast includes Shakira, Idris Elba, and J.K. Simmons. This cartoon hasn’t really been on my 2016 radar much yet, but I definitely enjoyed this teaser. You have my attention, Zootopia. Now just don’t blow it. The film opens in theaters on March 4, 2016.
