Disney’s Star Wars Rebels only just ended its first season with last night’s revelatory “Fire Across the Galaxy,” but already Season 2 is bigger and Buffy-er than ever. Hera may have competition for Kanan, now that Freddie Prinze Jr.’s real-life wife Sarah Michelle Gellar joins the voice cast in a mysterious new role.

Details on the erstwhile Buffy the Vampire Slayer’s Star Wars Rebels role aren’t yet available, supervising director Dave Filoni having only made the announcement at Disney Media’s latest presentation. Said the Rebels leader:

We’re thrilled to have Sarah Michelle Gellar on board for season two. She is a true Star Wars Rebels fan and her passion undoubtedly comes through in the voice recording sessions.

For those not following the Disney XD series, Star Wars Rebels takes place in the years just before A New Hope, and features Gellar’s husband Freddie Prinze Jr. in the regular cast as “cowboy Jedi” Kanan. Gellar herself has multiple voiceover credits as well, including Robot Chicken, The Simpsons and American Dad.

Star Wars Rebels Season 2 doesn’t yet have a formal release date, though at least some announcements are expected from Star Wars Celebration in April. In the meantime, plenty of tantalizing tidbits on characters and casting have emerged, but how might Sarah Michelle Gellar fit in?
