Alfonso Cuaron won Best Director at the 2014 Golden Globes, announced Sunday, January 12 during the live awards ceremony hosted by Tina Fey and Amy Poehler.

Last year's Best Director winner, Ben Affleck, came out on stage to reveal Cuaron's win for his work on 'Gravity,' starring Sandra Bullock and George Clooney. Among the contenders for the award were Steve McQueen ('12 Years a Slave'), Paul Greengrass ('Captain Phillips'), Alexander Payne ('Nebraska') and David O. Russell ('American Hustle').

In 'Gravity,' Bullock and Clooney star as a medical engineer and a veteran astronaut, respectively, who are hurled into open space when debris destroys the satellite on which they're working, and, consequently, their fellow crew members.
