Martin Freeman Teases ‘Captain America: Civil War’ Role

We know quite a bit about who’s who in Captain America: Civil War, which might as well be titled Avengers 2.5 for all the MCU players it features. But there’s one cast member we know absolutely nothing about: Martin Freeman, whose fictional identity has remained top secret since his casting was announced a few months ago. In a new interview, Freeman himself lifts the veil of secrecy just a little to tell us what we can expect from his mystery character.

While speaking with BadTaste.it (via Coming Soon), Freeman couldn’t get too specific about his character, though he did offer up some details about his “ambiguous” part:

He works for the American government. He works in conjunction with the superheroes, and certain agencies that help to tame the superheroes’ power, I suppose. So you’re not quite sure which side he’s on. It looks a little bit like he’s playing one game when actually he’s playing another. It’s the kind of character I like because it’s ambiguous and because you don’t know whether he’s good or bad. I like that area that isn’t black or white, I like the grays, because I think there’s just more fun to be had in not playing one obvious line.

Based on the Marvel comic book series, Captain America: Civil War finds Tony Stark and Steve Rogers at odds over a new federal superhero regulation program, with Iron Man standing alongside the government and Captain America opposing him. The disagreement will spark a major divide in the MCU, forcing superheroes to choose sides.

In addition to the new Avengers lineup, Chadwick Boseman’s Black Panther and Tom Holland’s Spider-Man will make their debuts in Captain America: Civil War, with Frank Grillo returning as Crossbones, Sebastian Stan as Winter Soldier, and Daniel Bruhl appearing as the villainous Baron Zemo. Also returning from the MCU are William Hurt’s General Ross and Emily VanCamp’s Agent 13.
